Control freak. I freely and happily acknowledge that about myself. It occasionally creates more work for me, but on the flip side, taking charge makes things easier for me.
I have written freelance for almost twenty years, contributing to print magazines, newspapers, online features and blogs. But I decided I want to call my own shots, write about what, how and when I want to. I live life different, and I want to share my stories. I want to muse randomly, explain excitedly and make my own rules. This is not my first rodeo. Professionally a physical therapist, I owned my own clinic for fifteen years. When I sold it in 2008, I still wanted to help people, but did not want to be tied down to a location. My partner and I spent a year working with a website designer and a creative consultant, designing an online presence to deliver an array of services. We were called The Body Mentors, with the aim to promote well being, and offered health, fitness, travel, food and wine advice. We had a side business called Globetrotters, an endeavour more focused on fitness travel opportunities. We built the sites, but “they” did not come, and after a year of putting in our time, effort and a little bit of money, we shut down both domains. Fast forward fifteen years and so much has changed, but not quite ready to jump back in. Just taking baby steps with my own blog site, a platform for me to be me. About five years ago, I met with a strategic marketer, with the goal of improving my pitches and getting publishers to notice. After spending some time talking about my background and my goals, she gave me one simple piece of advice that still resonates. “You are the brand. Listen to what you have done. Your readers want to be you, they want to have your life, do what you do”. Maybe not 100% true, but I have to admit, my life done different is a pretty fun ride!
